Introduction
   
在vi中，打一個冒號 ':' ，就可以進入ex摸式， vi 結合ex後，其威力變得強 大得難以想像。
   
ex是一個以 「行」 為作用單位的編輯器，
   
可以同時對很多行下同一指令，因此可以同時間作許多事。
   
例如一個簡單的指令可把一篇文章中之所有 "nccu" 字串改成 "NCCU" 字串。
  
這種能力在很多編輯器中都有。 而且，讀者也許會質疑這種情況出現的情形不多，好處不大。
但，
 
ex 擁有一威力強大的 "Regular Expression"
   
由於具備了Regular Expression的能力，ex可用 同一指令同時處理許多不同的物件，
   
例如，可同時把所有 "nccu"、"Nccu" 等一起改成 "NCCU"，
   
或是把含有某一字串的「行」同時刪除。
 
筆者有此譬喻：
   
如果把vi看成一般的砲彈，那vi加ex就成了飛彈，如再加上Regular Expression，那就成了帶核子彈頭的洲際飛彈了。
  
雖然其它編輯器也可能有類似的功能（例如word）， 但使用ex中的Regular Expression有一個絕大的好處，因為 ex中的Regular Expression與sed、awk、lex、perl等 UNIX常用軟體工具所使用者大致相同，因此常使用ex者， 自然而然會把Regular Expression練得好好的，在使用 其他軟體工具時大大的佔便宜。
(如果用的是不同Regular Expression的編輯器，那 就沒機會常常練習UNIX中最通用的Regular Expression了。) 讀者也許會認為：會使用Regular Expression與否，對使用者 的影響並不大。其實依筆者自己的經驗而言，如果不會 Regular Expression的話，筆者在UNIX上做事的生產力會被癈掉九成以上。

Ex的指令分成三段:
作用範圍  作用指令  Argument
作用範圍
   
「作用範圍」指的是作用指令所要作用的「行」，其格式如下:

由於使用者在下指令時並不一定知道最後一行的行數，有些時候非常不方便。
   
例如：你想要將所有的 "nccu" 字串改成 "NCCU" 字串，而假如最後一行是第1024 行，下面的指令可以做到： 
   1,1024s/nccu/NCCU/g
   
如果你不知道最後一行是1024行，那就很不方便了。
   
在ex中，'$' 字元可代表最後一行。 
   1,$s/nccu/NCCU/g
   
當一個ex指令沒有指定作用範圍時，那可能表示該指令將作用於全部範圍， 或是本行，視指令之內容而定。
   
如: 指令d是要刪除本行，
   
而指令w卻要將整個檔案存檔。

Argument
   
所謂的argument，即是參數之意，因為有時候它的含意並非參數，因此此地還是 用argument以避免混淆。
   
從上面的例子中可看出，除了指令s之外，其他幾個指令都很簡單，很容易理解。
   
而指令s則有很多變化，用的巧的話，威力無窮。我們就來看看他的變化。
 
分隔符號
   
在指令s之後，有二至三個字串，以分隔符號分開成二個區間，
   
最常用的分隔符號是'/'，
   
但是，只要三個符號彼此相同，用任意的符號都可以，
   
下例中兩個指令其實是相同的。 
   1,100s/nccu/NCCU/g
   1,100s|nccu|NCCU|g
   
第一個區間代表被替換的字串，
第二個區間代表欲代進去的字串，
第二個區間之後是所謂的post modifier，輔助指令。
   
常用的輔助指令只有一個g。
   
例：
原文 指令 結果
karama vs. karama
s/karama/KARAMA/g
KARAMA vs. KARAMA
karama vs. karama
s/karama/KARAMA/
KARAMA vs. karama
   
第一個指令會把本行中所有karama字串改為KARAMA，
   
而後者只會改第一個karama字串。

呼叫UNIX指令
sh
Execute a subshell, back to vi by `^D'.
[x,y]!<cmd>
Execute a shell <cmd> [on lines x through y; these lines will serve as input for <cmd> and will be replaced by its standard output].
[x,y]!! [<args>]
Repeat last shell command [and append <args>].
[x,y]!<cmd> ! [<args>]
Use the previous command (the second `!') in a new command.
[*]!<move><cmd>
The shell executes <cmd>, with as standard input the lines described by <*><move>, next the standard output replaces those lines (think of `cb', `sort', `nroff', etc.).
[*]!!<cmd>
Give <*> lines as standard input to the shell <cmd>, next let the standard output replace those lines.
[*]!!! [<args>]
Use the previous <cmd> [and append <args> to it].
x,y w !<cmd>
Let lines x to y be standard input for <cmd> (notice the <sp> between the `w' and the `!').
r!<cmd>
Put the output of <cmd> onto a new line.

如果大家已經習慣了使用萬用字元於檔案名稱的敘述，應該已經 享受到其樂趣：只要用一個符號就可以代表很多不同的字串，可以 省下很多功夫，大幅提高效率。 同樣的，在ex中，也支援字串的 Regular Expression. 當我們在搜尋字串，或比對字串時，如果對象是一群類似的字串， 如果能用一些符號來代表，將會很方便。假設我們要將 'shell' 及 'Shell' 全部改成 'SHELL'，如果沒有Regular Expression, 那我們就要下兩次替代指令才行，但有了Regular Expression的話， 我們只需一個替代指令即可，如下； 
  1,$s/[Ss]hell/SHELL/g
讀者應該可以猜出來這裡的'[]'所 代表的意義，跟檔案名稱的萬用字元中的'[]'是一樣的。 以下是 ex 支援的 Regular Expression:

代表前面的字元出現任意多次（包括零次）

代表前面的字元出現一次或一次以上

代表a或b或c或d

第 d 個比對到的次字串 (substring)
   
Back Reference 的機制對於支援 Regular Expression 的替代指令 是非常重要的，因為能符合Regular Expression 的字串可能不止一種，替代的字串如果需要使用到所比對到的字串， (例如將比對到的字串加上括弧)，如果沒有 Back Reference 機制， ，根本寫不出來所需的替代指令。
 
例 
 1,$s/NCCU/(&)/g    #將所有的NCCU 加上括弧

 1,$s/[Nn][Cc][Cc][Uu]/(&)/g    #將所有大小寫的NCCU 加上括弧

 1,$s/..*/"&"/   #將每一行之前後加上引號

我們可以將 ex 的指令放在一個檔案內，然後利用 I/O 轉向 請 ex 從檔案中讀取指令進行編輯如下： 
 
  ex file < ex.script
這是非常有用的。如果 我們要對很多檔案進行相同的編輯動作，若無此種功能，我們 只好用一個編輯器將檔案一個個叫出來編輯，那是非常痛苦的事， 有了這種功能，我們只需利用編輯器製造一個ex 指令檔，然後 寫一個shell script 將所有檔案批次編輯如下:
