一個「群體行動網路」係由一組 行動電腦（筆記型電腦或 PDA）組成，其間以 Multi-Hop Ad Hoc 無線區域網路 連結成 Wireless Intranet，其中有部分的行動電腦具備伺服器功能以及 連接 Wireless Internet 的功能，稱為 Mobile Gateway。 各個行動電腦之間可藉由高速的 Wireless Intranet 進行即時多媒體網路通訊， 並可間接透過 Mobile Gateway 接取較低頻寬的 Wireless Internet 。

很多行動計算的問題在隨意型無線區域網路上均會面臨新的挑戰， 以致於必須針對此種特殊環境另行研究設計解決方案，茲舉數例:
☉ Network Architecture

☉ Multi-path Routing Problem

在隨意型無線區域網路中，一個Client可能可以連接到數個鄰近的 client，當它要藉由鄰近之Client連接上Mobile Gateway時， 可能有數個選擇，選擇的結果，使它可以經由不同的路徑連接到 相同或不同的 Mobile Gateway 上，如何選擇最佳的連接點以提升 通訊效率， 便成為一個值得研究的問題。
☉ Hidden Terminal Problem
-
若有兩部彼此無法通訊之Client同時與另一部Client通訊時，其無線電波必定會 互相干擾，但這兩部Client並無法偵知所產生之干擾，因此無法順利進行通訊，此稱 Hidden Terminal問題。 本問題在Multi-Hop Ad Hoc無線區域網路的情形下更形 嚴重，值得再深入探討。
☉ Traffice Control ProblemD

在Single-Hop的無線區域網路上，Multicast可用簡單的Broadcast 的方式輕易解決。 但在 Multi-Hop 情形之下，Broadcast的方式會演變成Flooding的Routing方式， 極為浪費頻寬。應尋求更有效的方式執行 Multicast的任務。
☉ 定位與移動性管理問題 (Positioning and Mobility Management)

在許多應用中必須確實的掌握Client的實際位置以及相對於網路的位置。例如，行動 警政資訊系統的應用中，指揮中心必須掌握每個員警的實際位置(或者附屬於那一個 Mobile Gateway)。 以利警力調配。又如，在決定Multicast路徑時，必須知道隨意 網路的拓樸，以求得最佳的Multicast路徑。因此定位及拓樸之決定是一個值得 研究的問題。
☉ 效率與服務品質問題 (Effiecncy and QoS Probelms)

在Multi-Hop的情形下，某些中介者必須提供資源協助臨近的Client進行通訊。其 上行通道的資料流量必定因而大增，換言之，其通訊及運算容量為所支援的鄰近 Clients所瓜分。如何平衡網路中所有的中介者資源也是值得研究的問題。
☉ IP Availability and Mobile IP Problems

要支援Mobile IP時，Client 必須向Foreign Agent註冊， 俾使Foreign Agent 能提供必要之轉接服務。在我們的架構中， Mobile Gateway 很自然成為一個放置 Foreign Agent的適當位置， 但是一個client可能可以選擇不同的 Mobile Gateway 作為它的 Foreign Client。如何選擇適當的 Mobile Gateway 以提升網路的 效率，也是一個重要的問題。

| 雛形系統的建構方案 (Step for Building Prototype) |

☉ 第一階段：
─ 以 MS Windows 為系統平台整合現有軟體，快速建構一個不具透通能力的實驗平台。
- 由於通訊系統軟體之製作為一艱鉅之工程，為了快速進行 concept proof 的工作， 有必要先行以整合現有軟體之方式建造一個簡單的雛形系統。我們將在 Mobile Gateway 上建構一個 類似 Wingate 的軟體，供 client 掛上， Mobiel Client 必須掛上 Mobile Gateway，才能以 Mobile Gateway 作為 TCP/IP 的基地， 獲得 Internet 的各種服務。 由於無法掌握各項軟體之程式碼，本階段所開發之雛形系統 所能提供之研究非常有限，長期而言，必須自建所有必要之系統軟體。
☉ 第二階段：
─ 以 Linux 為系統平台，開發所有的系統元件，建構一個透通(transparent) 的TCP/IP 行動電腦網路。
- 在本階段，我們將全力開發所有必要軟體元件以掌握所有程式碼， 進而可以支援較為深入的前瞻性學術研究。 Mobiel Client 將可直接進接網際網路，就像在固定網路時一般，不必分兩階段。 關於衛星的 access, 將視實際使用的方便性，再決定是否建構於我們 的雛形系統中。主要的考慮是衛星通訊的天線，具高度指向性，除了低軌道 的行動衛星通訊，並不一定適合行動中的使用者。

Thirty -Nine Connecticut Towns' 600 police cars are equipped with high-speed wieless laptop computers. Police officers will be able to send information to other officers, and connect to state and federal databases for information on suspects, vehicles and stolen property.

SNET provides network services and CDPD(Cellular Digital Packet Data) provides error-free and rapid data transmission.
☉ Guilford Police Department

The Guilford Police Department has completed their wireless data communications pilot using Telepartner International's mobile computing software and SNET Mobility's Cellular Digital Packet Data network services. That allows officers to gain vital suspect information and complete paperwork while remaining in the field. The officers are equipped with laptop computers with Telepartner's software solution and wireless modems. The laptops enable them to access their AS/400 applications and data in Guilford, the state's mainframe "COLLECT" system in Hartford, CT, the National Crime Information Center in Washington, DC, and the National Law Enforcement Telecommunication System, in Phoenix, AZ. In addition, software developer Diversified Computer Systems(DCS) designed a reporting system that allows the officers to access and file reports from their laptops over the CDPD network.

Other police departments using wireless computers are Alexandria Police Department, VA, Ft. Lauderdale Police Department, Fla, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Department, NJ. The information services provided by these systems are similar to the previous two systems, i.e., secure accessing information and sending information with mobility. Some application also has the ability to transmit image data.
