Intranet applications usually start with publishing doc with Web technology. The benefits - save print cost and provide updated information instantly. for example, 美林證券 prints 7M pounds paper of financial doc and reports for its 15,000 financial consultants annually. The company is in the process of implementing an Intranet application with Web (NT Server and IIS) which is estimated to save 90% of papers a year. There is a lot of money saved, regardless of the benefits that people could easily access updated information with a browser.
The next step is to link Web with legacy database to publish information in the database system. Before Intranet to access database information requires special designed client software and hence is not easy to use and popular. Now people with a browser could access database easily to make better and informed decisions.
Collaboration is to integrate corp. messaging system with Intranet to implement Email, news and workflow applications to improve group communication and productivity. For example Exchange NetNews service could be served as the central newsgroup server for the corp.
Lastly, corp. could develop client server apps and implement mission critical apps on Intranet. Though this involves high risk and is still carefully evaluated by corp. but an intranet makes client/server simple for the end-user.
