It is an evolutionary process to build Intranet application. Corp. Intranet applications combines the best technologies of their existing corp. PC LAN and applications with the best technologies of Internet as a WAN. For example, corp. publish existing information in the SQL database (existing) with the Web technology (new) so that information can be accessed anywhere, anytime with a browser. Another example, with the fact that most of current doc in the corp. are in Microsoft Office format and we still need tools to analyze content (not just view content from a browser), corp. will use Office as the best tool to create, analyze and manage Intranet content. The evolutionary approach takes advantage of existing investment, utilize the best of current technologies on LAN while realizes the 'easy to access informaton' benefits of Web and Intranet.
